If ownership evidence is incomplete, incorrect, or lost and the seller cannot provide the necessary documents, TxDMV says the bonded-title procedure may be an available route. Eligibility depends on the state review.

The process is formally governed by Texas Transportation Code Chapter 501, and administered by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV). This guide covers the standard vehicle process. (Note: Boats and outboard motors follow a similar but distinct process handled by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department).

Step 1: Determine Eligibility

Review the official eligibility conditions before starting. A recorded lien of 10 years or less requires an original release of lien or letter of no interest. If the title was already issued in your name and was lost, TxDMV provides a separate certified-copy process.

Step 2: Submit Paperwork to TxDMV

You cannot purchase a bond yet. First, you must visit a TxDMV Regional Service Center. You will need to submit:

  • A completed Statement of Fact for Bonded Title (Form VTR-130-SOF).
  • Valid photo ID.
  • Any supporting evidence of ownership (bill of sale, canceled check, etc.).

The TxDMV will conduct a vehicle record search. If approved, they will issue you a letter stating the appraised value of the vehicle and the required bond amount.

Step 3: Purchase the Title Bond

With your TxDMV letter in hand, you have one year to purchase a Texas Certificate of Title Bond. The bond amount must be exactly 1.5 times the value determined by the TxDMV.

Use our Bond Selector to match the listing label and signature format identified in your filing instructions. Confirm the accepted format before checkout.

Step 4: Apply at Your County Tax Office

Once you have your bond, you have exactly 30 days from the date of bond issuance to file it with your local county tax assessor-collector office. You must bring:

  • The original TxDMV approval letter.
  • The purchased title bond.
  • An Application for Texas Title and/or Registration (Form 130-U).
  • Proof of insurance (if registering the vehicle).

Important Timeline

TxDMV instructs applicants to submit the required documents to the county tax office within 30 days of purchasing the bond. Confirm current timing and document requirements with the official instructions.
